Kamathipura, one of Mumbai's oldest and most historic neighborhoods, was established in 1795 and gained prominence as a red-light district during British rule. Named after the 'Kamathis' laborers from Andhra Pradesh, it became a hub for prostitution in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Once among Asia's largest red-light areas, its population of sex workers has significantly declined due to police crackdowns, AIDS awareness, and redevelopment efforts. Over time, the area has transformed, with many brothels making way for residential and commercial developments, reflecting Mumbai's evolving urban landscape.
