The Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC), now known as the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), was established in 2013 to oversee the development of the metro project. Construction for the first corridor began on September 27, 2014, with the 8.5 km stretch from Transport Nagar to Charbagh being completed and inaugurated on September 5, 2017.

By March 9, 2019, the full Red Line (North-South Corridor) was operational, stretching 22.88 km from Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport to Munshi Pulia, covering 23 stations.

The Lucknow Metro has witnessed a remarkable increase in ridership, establishing itself as a preferred mode of transport for daily commuters. On January 1, 2024, it recorded an all-time high of 1.30 lakh passengers, surpassing its previous best of 93,237 passengers on December 25, 2023. The steady rise in passenger numbers highlights the growing trust and dependency on metro services for fast, reliable, and affordable commuting. With punctual operations, reduced travel time, and an extensive network, the metro has significantly eased urban mobility, making public transport an attractive alternative to private vehicles.

Beyond its role in transportation, the Lucknow Metro has become a key driver of economic growth in the region. The increase in footfall at metro stations has spurred commercial activity, leading to the development of new retail outlets, food courts, and business centers around metro corridors. Additionally, improved accessibility has boosted real estate demand, with property values rising in metro-connected areas. Residential and commercial projects near metro stations have gained traction, attracting investors and businesses eager to capitalize on the metro's connectivity benefits.

Furthermore, the metro has generated direct and indirect employment opportunities, contributing to Lucknow's economic expansion. Thousands of jobs have been created in metro construction, station management, security, maintenance, and administration. The expansion plans, including the East-West Corridor and six additional metro lines, are expected to further fuel job creation and urban development. East-West Corridor (Blue Line) - Awaiting Approval

The proposed East-West Corridor of the Lucknow Metro aims to enhance cross-city connectivity by covering a distance of 11.165 km from Charbagh to Vasant Kunj. This corridor is expected to decongest road traffic, improve accessibility for daily commuters, and serve as a crucial link between key commercial and residential areas. The project is currently awaiting Public Investment Board (PIB) clearance, which is anticipated by March 2025. Upon approval, it will require a final nod from the Union Cabinet before construction can officially commence. Additional Corridors Planned

To further enhance the metro network, the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has proposed six new corridors, which will expand the total metro length to 79.976 km. These corridors will improve accessibility to densely populated and emerging areas, boosting economic activity and urban development. Below are the details of the planned corridors:

1. Munshipulia to Jankipuram (6.450 km)
• This corridor will connect Munshipulia to Jankipuram, providing a direct metro link to one of Lucknow's fast-growing residential areas.
• It will ease congestion along major roads and improve public transport options for people residing in the northern parts of the city.
2. IIM to Rajajipuram (17.16 km)
• The proposed IIM to Rajajipuram corridor will serve areas with high student and working-class populations.
• It will improve connectivity to educational institutions like IIM Lucknow and densely populated areas such as Rajajipuram, facilitating easier daily commutes.
• This corridor is expected to boost real estate development and promote commercial investments along the route.
3. Charbagh to SGPGI (8.855 km)
• This metro extension will provide direct connectivity to the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), one of the region's premier medical institutions.
• It will benefit healthcare workers, patients, and visitors, offering a faster and more efficient mode of transport.
• This corridor will also improve access to educational and research institutions in the area.
4. Indira Nagar to Ekana Stadium (3.480 km)
• This corridor will connect Indira Nagar, a major residential area, to Ekana Stadium, one of Lucknow's most important sports complexes.
• It will cater to the large crowds traveling to the stadium during sports events, making travel smoother and reducing traffic congestion on match days.
• The route will also enhance metro accessibility to nearby commercial and entertainment hubs.
5. Ekana Stadium to Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (16.470 km)
• This major corridor will create a direct link between the city's sports and business districts and the international airport.
• Passengers will have a seamless metro connection from the airport to key residential, business, and sporting hubs, reducing dependency on road transport.
• It will significantly enhance connectivity for domestic and international travelers, making travel to and from the airport more convenient.
6. Sachivalaya to CG City South (9.246 km)
• This corridor will connect Sachivalaya, the city's administrative hub, to CG City South, a rapidly developing area with growing commercial and residential sectors.
• It is expected to serve government employees, business professionals, and residents, making their daily commute easier and more sustainable.
• The route will also boost infrastructure development and support future urban expansion.
