The words 'contemporary' and 'modern are often used interchangeably to describe architecture, furniture, and overall home style and design. But not many know that the two are absolutely different!
Before we at Dwello embark on a journey to unravel contemporary ideas let us understand what it really means.
'Contemporary' architecture and style is about the present-day and refers to what is being created and produced right now. Contemporary style isn't tied down to one specific style which makes it dynamic. It is based on the concept of minimalism.
As contemporary is not a historic style in itself it will most likely change in definition as the years' progress. Contemporary design consists of simple lines and solid geometric forms. This style consists of large open spaces and open living areas with lots of natural light and large unadorned windows. Outdoor living areas are also a key to create a flowing, open living space in contemporary design.
The contemporary style uses advanced technology and modern building materials, such as Tube structure which allows construction of the buildings that are taller, lighter and stronger than those in the 20th century. The use of new techniques of computer-aided design allows buildings to be designed and modelled on computers in three dimensions with more precision and speed.
Wood is used but it will usually be very light or very dark to contrast with the neutral black, white, cream, beige and grey color palette that is fundamental of today's contemporary design. To add some color in this design style the neutrals are paired with bold colors and subtle patterns to create a contrast.
Contemporary architecture tends to opt more often for curved lines, instead of straight ones. In some cases, a building is entirely designed around curved lines, which allows the designer to work on non-identical spaces.
Larger and more plentiful windows are an important characteristic of contemporary architecture. Another common contemporary trend involves keeping plants in the indoors.
'Modern' style of architecture on the other hand describes a static (era-specific) design style. Modern design is connected to the age of machination and is typically referred to of that of the 1920s-1950s.
Modern design only involves use of glass, steel and reinforced concrete for construction.
