Latest Updates on Pune Metro

The Pune Metro project is undergoing significant advancements, with operational lines, expanding infrastructure, and extended services aiming to revolutionize urban transport in the city. Below is a more detailed breakdown of the current status, future expansions, special services, and other key developments in the Pune Metro project.

Current Status of Operations

The Pune Metro currently operates two primary lines:

  1. Purple Line: Extending from PCMC to Swargate.
  2. Aqua Line: Connecting Vanaz to Ramwadi.

Purple Line (PCMC to Swargate)

The Purple Line is a vital corridor that serves major areas like Pimpri-Chinchwad and is scheduled to extend underground from Civil Court to Swargate. The underground section is anticipated to be operational by September 2024, though the exact date has not been officially confirmed yet.

This extension is crucial for easing traffic and enhancing public transportation in central Pune, offering seamless connectivity between important business districts and residential areas. When completed, the line will reduce travel time for commuters between the northern industrial hub and southern residential regions.

Aqua Line (Vanaz to Ramwadi)

The Aqua Line covers some of Pune's busiest residential and commercial areas such as Kothrud, Shivajinagar, and Koregaon Park. This line is designed to cater to Pune's western and eastern corridors, with plans for further extension to improve connectivity. Currently, both the Purple and Aqua lines are partially operational, and additional sections are expected to open soon. Once completed, these lines will ease traffic congestion and reduce reliance on personal vehicles.

Phase 1: Expansions and Progress

The first phase of the Pune Metro project spans 31.25 km and is in its final stages. A key component of this phase is the underground section connecting Civil Court to Swargate, which will greatly enhance north-south connectivity through Pune's busiest areas.

This section includes a critical multimodal hub at the Civil Court station, integrating metro services with other public transport options like buses and taxis, making travel more convenient for daily commuters.

Phase 2: Planned Extensions

Phase 2 of the Pune Metro project focuses on expanding the network into underserved areas and improving access to emerging suburbs and industrial zones.

Swargate to Katraj (Purple Line Extension)

This extension covers 5.46 km and includes key stations at Pushmangal Chowk, Shankar Maharaj Math, and Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park. This phase is crucial for improving public transport in southern Pune and is expected to be completed by 2027.

Once finished, this extension will ease congestion on major roads like Satara Road and provide residents in these areas a reliable alternative to buses and personal vehicles.

Shivajinagar to Kadam Wakwasti (Red Line/Line 3)

The Red Line is being developed as part of Pune Metro's long-term plans, stretching 18 km between Shivajinagar and Kadam Wakwasti. This extension will serve the eastern parts of Pune, linking key residential and commercial areas.

The Red Line is expected to be fully operational by March 2025, offering a vital link between Pune's growing suburbs and its central business district.

Pimpri-Chinchwad to Nigdi Extension

Additionally, the Pimpri-Chinchwad to Nigdi extension will enhance public transport in the northern suburbs of Pune. New stations such as Tilak Chowk will be added to this route. This development aims to support both industrial growth and residential development in these areas, offering a convenient alternative to road transport.

Special Service for Ganesh Chaturthi

During the Ganesh Festival in September 2024, Pune Metro extended its service hours to manage the increased footfall of commuters traveling for the celebrations:

  • From September 10 to 16, 2024, metro services operated for 18 hours daily, from 6:00 AM to midnight. This was in response to the higher demand for transport during the festive season.

  • On September 17, 2024, for Anant Chaturdashi, Pune Metro ran a 24-hour service, operating from 6:00 AM on September 17 to 6:00 AM on September 18. This uninterrupted service played a significant role in managing the heavy crowd flow on one of Pune's busiest festival days.

Future Prospects and Fare Structure

The Pune Metro project is designed to provide affordable, eco-friendly, and efficient public transportation across the city. The fare structure is kept economical, with rates ranging from ₹10 to ₹50, depending on the distance traveled.

These affordable rates are aimed at encouraging the use of public transport, reducing traffic congestion, and minimizing the city's carbon footprint.

Currently, the metro operates from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with trains running every 30 minutes. Plans are in place to reduce the waiting time to 15 minutes as more sections of the metro become operational.

As future lines and extensions are completed, the Pune Metro is expected to serve as a cornerstone of Pune's public transport network, enhancing connectivity and improving the overall quality of life for its residents.
