The complete Vastu guide for your home
The complete Vastu guide for your home
How to make your home Vastu compliant? Find the answer here.

Vastu shastra is a traditional Hindu system of architecture which translates to "science of architecture." It lays down certain principles of design, layout, measurements, ground preparation, space arrangement and spatial geometry which help in the proper well-being of the individuals that reside within such geography. Here we enlist certain points that you can consider while designing or setting up your home to make it Vastu compliant.

DIRECTIONS

Main Entrance

As per Vastu, the main door of your house must be constructed in a way as to ensure that when you step out, you face the north, east or north-east direction. Many homeowners in India have a habit of placing a shoe rack or dustbin outside the main door. This should be avoided as it creates blockage and generates stress in mind and blocks the money.

One must avoid placing a fountain, or any water-centric element and animal statues outside the main door. Ensure that your main door opens in a clockwise manner and is well lit.

The main door should be made from thick wood and should never be painted black. Also make sure to put the nameplate at the entrance.

If there is a wall at the entrance, don't leave it naked. Decorate the wall using your creativity.

Puja Room

The east or north-east part of your home is perfect for spiritual pursuits. Facing this direction while doing the prayers will increase positivity.

White, beige, light yellow or green are great colour options for this room.

Living Room

The thumb rule to keep in mind for your living room is that it must be clutter-free. The living room should face east, north or north-east. Alternatively, a north-west-facing living room is also favourable.

Always opt for square or rectangular pieces of furniture instead or circular ones. Heavy furniture should be kept in the west or south-west direction of the living room while all electronics and appliances should be installed in the south-east section of the living room.

If there is a mirror in the room, ensure it is placed on the north wall. Yellow or white are great colour options for this room.

Bedroom

Having your bedroom in the south-west corner brings good health and prosperity.

It should be kept in mind that the bed is not aligned to any wall and is placed in the centre of the room. You can sleep in any direction other than the one where your legs face towards the south as it is considered the Place of Yama (the Lord of Death) and shall result in health issues.

Best place to have wardrobes or shelves is the South-West corner of the bedroom.

Avoid placing a mirror or television in front of the bed. Your reflection must not be seen in a mirror when in bed as it causes fights and other domestic disruptions.

Paint your bedroom walls in neutral or earthy shades as it radiates positive energy. Avoid painting your walls black. As per Vastu, the master bedroom can be painted with blue colour, while the guest room and kids room can be painted with white colour.

Kitchen

You must plan your kitchen in the south east corner. Avoid kitchen in North-East as it causes mental tension among family members.

Kitchen is the food factory of our home and it needs to be in perfect balance because the two opposite force of nature, fire and water, exist here. Avoid placing the sink and stove in the same line and should be as far as possible. Place them in such a way that they don't collide with each other.

The walls of the kitchen can be painted with orange or red colour.

Bathroom

The only rule for a bathroom is that the seat of the toilet should face North-South. The bathroom should preferably be painted with white colour.

ELEMENTS

Painting

Paintings showing the scenic view of river, flowing water or goldfish on the wall brings good luck and wealth to your life. The larger the painting, the more energy it will attract. Pictures or photos depicting violence in any form should not be placed in the residence or place of business.

Aquarium

Aquarium brings home positive energy and attracts fortune. Make sure that the fishes in the aquarium are healthy, active, strong swimmer and always on the move. Flowing water and fishes symbolize the flow of energy and prosperity. The ideal place for the aquarium is the north-east position of the room.

Windows

Sparkling clean glass of windows and doors attracts fresh and positive energy in your home.

Corners

There should not be five corners in the ceiling of a room. If your room is constructed that way, then you can put bamboo flutes or small pyramids to curb its negative effects.

Wind Chimes

Wind chimes are known to bring money into your home. Hanging wind chimes at the entrance of your home welcomes wealth while hanging them at the bathroom entrance prevents wealth from draining out.

Money Plant

Money plant is known to bring prosperity and good luck to your home. As per Vastu keeping the money plant in a green vase in the north direction helps attract money and better career opportunities.

Clocks

As per Vastu, clocks are devices that energize a direction and bring wealth. Vastu suggests to place clocks in the north or northeast direction. Make sure that all clocks in your house are in working condition. Slow or non-functional clocks symbolize delays or a stagnation in your finances.

Laughing Buddha

A laughing Buddha statue symbolizes peace and harmony. Place it in the drawing room, kitchen or garden.

Curtains

If your living room windows face the north or east from where the morning sun comes in, hang light or sheer curtains, and for windows in the south or west, use heavy drapes.
