An adornment in Mumbai's period architecture, the Horniman Circle is enchanting its tale of landmark pride for centuries now. The circle was constructed in order to establish the commercial quarter for the country's financial capital. Mumbai, then Bombay, has never failed to attract businesses and the aspirants of affluence since its inception. Legends say that the nomenclature of Bombay comes from a phrase "a bay of boom" (or bounty). The sprawling markets and profiteering enterprises longed for structural grandeur. Hence, the entire district was erected with the name of Bombay Greens, which we now know as the Horniman Circle.
The structure dates back to the early nineteenth century, its foundation was laid in 1821. The works were finished after 12 years, imposing a central garden, impressive facades and the gentrified version of a dumping yard. the total area was over10,100 sq. metres, with shops and offices in multiple floors and spanned across various blocks, just like the Connaught Place of New Delhi. From the start itself, the building hosted pioneers of different industries like the top banking institutions, insurance companies and retail outlets to name a few. The Georgian architecture of the circle buildings complements the schemes of various other avenues of South Mumbai, the prime example being the Asiatic Library which is positioned in the centre of the circle as one of the most impressive landmarks with a greek facade and signature staircase.
The circle had names like the Bombay Greens and the Elphinstone Circle but after the independence, it was named the Horniman Circle in the honour of a British Journalist who supported India's freedom struggle and busted many wrongdoings of the colonial government through his journalism. Having an archaeological status, the entire complex is listed for the upkeep of the historic charm it offers. The circle hosts many events throughout the year from fields of art, cultural and literature, some of which are the famous Kala Ghoda Arts Festival and Ruhaniyat, the Sufi festival. Though Mumbai now is set to decentralise its southern headquarter district, places like the Horniman Circle witness and succeed in tests of time and prominence in character.
