A new area proposed to spearhead employment and economic activity with the urban limits of Mumbai metropolis is the Bhiwandi Kalyan Corridor, aka the 'new BKC'. This area lies towards the north-east of Thane and has been a manufacturing-cum-warehousing hub for decades now. Bhiwandi is known to have absorbed all the textile mills which were driven out of Mumbai due to mounting costs.
The new BKC is bestowed upon by a dedicated metro-line, which is to start within the near future; as well a concrete development plan involving the creation of roads and world-class infrastructure. Kalyan benefits from the proximity from Mumbai-Pune Expressway and Bhiwandi to the neighbouring Thane.
This proposed region, though densely populated, has a promising future in terms of affordable housing, employment and better civic standard within the next five years.
