When one thinks of a contemporary decor, he thinks of whites, blues, greens and other pastel colours. A Contemporary layout requires allotting specific spaces to specific things to maintain an uncluttered look. There are certain characteristics that define contemporary furniture, lighting, wall decor, wall paint and other elements. In the midst of all this, contemporary furnishings/upholstery should not get out of focus. From cushion covers to table runners, all furnishings should be in step with the overall contemporary decor.

Contemporary Rugs

The conventional habit is to buy rugs that match the overall colour and design schemes of the room. However, there are some characteristics that are particular to contemporary rugs. Contemporary rugs usually display stark contrasts in their colours. They may sport geometric, abstract or free-form designs. Some rugs may also incorporate bold colour choices. But, having said that, contemporary is also about decorating the home space according to one's own personality and preferences. Therefore, there is a large variety that one can choose from while buying rugs. If bold colours are not one's forte, he may choose subtle colours that fit seamlessly with the furniture and other upholstery.

If opting for matching colours, do not hassle about finding the exact colour. If you're unable to find the exact colour, try to match the shade. One can either (1) choose the rug first and then buy other upholstery according to that, or (2) buy other upholstery and then choose the rug accordingly.

One important thing to remember about the size of the rug is that the rug should run beyond the edges of the furniture. This would make the room appear larger. A small rug in a big room would make everything else look out of scale.

If the room is fairly large and includes two separate areas, say the dining and the living room area, then it would be a good option to place two different rugs. This will also show a subtle separation of the two areas.

Contemporary Curtains

Curtains make for a significant addition to the entire look of the room. Not only do they provide privacy and insulation, but they also add texture, dimension, and colour to the room. Contemporary curtains share some similarities with curtains of other styles. One of these is in the material used. Cotton, silk, and linen are the most routinely used materials. These offer a fall (or hang) that looks natural and graceful. As is true of wall colour and furniture, contemporary curtains also speak for the home owner's style and personality.

Dual curtains, i.e curtains to which sheer curtains are attached are the most famous style of contemporary curtains. These not only add a degree of sophistication but also that of functionality. Sheer curtains allow one to block sunlight during certain hours of the day and enjoy natural light during other hours.

Curtains of different fabrics create different atmospheres. For instance, heavier fabrics like silk or velvet contribute to a more formal setting while lighter fabrics like linen give a more casual look.

Some people like keeping all windows and doors open, as a result of which the curtains get dirty fairly frequently. In such cases, cotton curtains are appropriate as they are easier to clean and dry.

Curtains are one of those things that remain in one's line of sight each day, inevitably. So, it is important to choose a colour that one will be excited (and comfortable) to live with. If the other upholstery of the room is patterned, then it would be a good idea to opt for solid-coloured curtains instead of patterned ones.

Contemporary Bedding and Bedsheets

We appreciate sheets only for their aesthetic value. But, sheets are as important as the mattresses and blankets. If one is not too fond of removing the bedsheet every night before sleeping, then he/she must opt for cotton sheets that are comfortable and presentable. Cotton sheets are a good choice for every climate. To bring some variety in styles and materials, one may opt for sheets that are a blend of cotton and rayon or cotton and other materials.

A lot has been said about thread count, but most people fail to understand what that exactly means. The number of threads in 1 square inch of fabric is the thread count of that fabric. A lower thread count sheet made from naturally soft fibres feel softer and more comfortable.

While bedsheets are something that one changes frequently, there should still be some guiding principle when it comes to the color schemes. To maintain an airy and light feel in the bedroom, opt for pastel colours. This will not only make the room seem larger but will also merge well with the walls and curtains (provided they are light-coloured too!)
