Location and Design of Rajkot International Airport

The existing Airport at Rajkot in the state of Gujarat, having an area of 236 acres, belongs to the Airports Authority of lndia. This airport is capacity constrained due to dense residential and commercial development all around it and does not have any scope for further expansion and also to meet Civil Aviation requirements. Therefore, Govt. of Gujarat has proposed a new lnternational Airport, Rajkot and entrusted it to Airports Authority of lndia. After the proposed New Greenfield Airport becomes operational, existing Rajkot Airport will cease functioning

The New Greenfield Airport is situated in Hirasar Village and is approximately 30 kilometers from the main city of Rajkot in Gujarat. Being strategically close to National Highway 8B (NH-8B), which connects Ahmedabad and Rajkot, the airport is easily accessible by road.

The Airport's design is a unique blend of traditional and modern elements, reflecting the cultural heritage of the region.

The terminal's facade design takes inspiration from the stunning Ranjit Vilas Palace and traditional art forms of Gujarat, such as the Dandiya dance. The exterior panel work at the drop-off area is inspired by Rajkot's famous golden jewelry and intricate filigree work, adding a touch of local craftsmanship to the airport's architecture.

An outer layer of traditional Jalis is added inside the building to reduce heat gain, incorporating local architectural elements.

The terminal building itself is designed and constructed under the expertise of Creative Group Architects, a reputable architectural firm based in Delhi. The airport's design is a testament to the city's rich cultural history and its ability to seamlessly integrate traditional elements into a contemporary setting, making it a standout feature among modern airports.
