Satish Gujral is a very well-renowned name in the artists' community as a man of many talents. He is celebrated well amongst Indians which resulted in a Padma Vibhushan in his extensive accolades. Throughout his life, Satish devoted himself to the world of writing, creating art and making statements. He also happens to be one of the very few notable artists to have embarked on an architectural career without any formal training of the field and excelled of course.
Satish was born in 1925, in Punjab of Undivided India. An accident caused him hearing impairment which added to his artistic drive. He pursued fine arts in the best institutions in the sub-continent like the Mayo School of Arts in Lahore and Sir JJ School of Arts in Bombay. Later, he was offered a scholarship to study at a premier art institution in Mexico City, and from there he rose to international fame. His name is often taken parallel to the post-independence India's modern arts' scene.
His sculptors made to the finest venues and galleries around the world, though his flair for buildings was awaiting his call. In the year 1984, Satish won a contest set up by the Belgian Embassy in New Delhi. The embassy was hoping to create a bilateral statement for the partnership between the two nations. Though amateur in constructing, Satish designed a never imagined piece of art on the canvas of bricks and mortar. The embassy building is now known to be one of the best 1000 structures built in the 19th century, in the whole world.
Apart from the famed building, Satish constructed other masterpieces like the University of Goa. His artistic drive never led him to chase the political benefits even though his brother once became the prime minister of India. He now lives in Delhi and has retired from the hustle the fame brings to him.
