Slums are those residential areas where dwellings are unfit for human habitation due to reasons of dilapidation, overcrowding, faulty designs of buildings, faulty arrangements of streets, and lack of ventilation, light or sanitation facilities.

Slums may be declared or undeclared. Declared slums are areas which have been formally declared as a slum by the respective municipal authority.
