Shani Shingnapur, a village in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district, is unique in ways unexpected. At first glance, it may seem like an ordinary village with shops and houses. However, what is unique is that none of these shops and houses have locks in them.
The village houses a temple dedicated to the Hindu God Shani (or the Saturn planet). Villagers' confidence and belief in this deity is the reason for the absence of locks. In 2011 the village got its first bank branch- The United Commercial (UCO) Bank- which is also without a lock! While the bank has taken necessary precautions for the protection of lockers and peoples' documents, it still retains the belief of the village and chooses to not lock the main doors of the bank.
