Our homes are nothing without our children. These little beings radiate energy and should seldom be tied down. Maintaining a child-friendly home will ensure that the children in our family can be unbound in their adventures, and in their dreams. Here are some easy ways to childproof your home.
1. EXPOSED PLUG POINTS
Even though modern homes promise safe and secure electrical systems, its best not to rely on them. Children are curious creatures and often stick their fingers in places that intrigue them. Take a preventive step, and buy protective covers for all your exposed plug points or strategically place furniture, that hide them effectively.
2. SHARP CORNERS
Children are like lightning. One minute they are here, and in a flash they're across the room. Crawling and stumbling, children often tend to fall over at odd spots. Having furniture and furnishings with sharp edges and corners could prove fatal if there is a growing child in the house. It's best to opt for furniture with round corners or keep articles that pose a threat out of the child's reach.
3. UN-MOUNTED TELEVISIONS
Toddlers who are learning how to walk need the support of chairs and tables. Often they heave themselves off the floor, throwing their full weight on the furniture. It is a good idea to mount your flat screen television securely on the wall, to avoid mishaps.
4. WINDOWS WITHOUT GRILLES
If you have a window that is low to the floor or a window seat, it is an absolute necessity to install sturdy window grilles so children can sit and play by the window without the risk of falling out. The same applies to balconies with low decks.
5. KEEP FAUCETS COVERED
While toddlers and children love to splash around in the tub, it's very easy for them to bump their head against a sharp faucet. Wrap the faucets with a rubber guard to avoid a messy accident.
