Travel time of Mumbaikars is seen cut by 30 minutes with the BKC-Chunabhatti connector finally thrown open to commuters since 11 th November 2019.

Travel time of Mumbaikars is seen reduced by 30 minutes with the BKC-Chunabhatti connector finally thrown open to commuters since 11th November 2019.

The fish-belly shaped elevated corridor is passing through BKC, Babubhai Compound, Central Railway (near Sion), Duncan Colony, Harbour line (Chunabbati station), Somaiya ground and lands at Eastern Express Highway.

Caretaker Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis in a series of tweets said that the 4-lane connector will provide faster connectivity to and from the Eastern Express Highway and also ease traffic towards Thane to Nashik and Panvel to Pune.

The flyover will reduce travel time for commuters by at least 30 minutes between Sion and Dharavi. The area is prone to traffic congestions as it houses a lot of business hubs, however, commuters will now be relived with the new flyover in place, said Fadnavis.

The 1.6-km long and 17 meters wide flyover has been planned and implemented by the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA). The flyover passes through BKC from Vakola at the end of the Western Express Highway to Kapadia Nagar. The route after Kapadia Nagar gets forked, of which one connects to the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road and the other connects to a flyover till Chunabhatti.

According to reports, if a person wants to reach the MMRDA building at BKC it would take at least half an hour via the 5.5 km Sion-Dharavi Link Road, however with the new flyover, it will take them a few minutes from Somaiya Ground off Eastern Express Highway.

The flyover is only open for bikes, cars, and buses. The MMRDA in a series of tweets informed citizens that trucks, trailers and 3 wheelers (auto-rickshaws) are not allowed on the new flyover.

As per reports, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) plans to run a bus on the recently opened route. BEST will change the route of bus number 473, which runs from Mahul Village to Bandra Station (West).

On the old route, the bus would ply via Sion and Dharavi junctions both known for heavy traffic snarls while the new route would see the bus taking the connector after Everard Nagar bus stop and go via BKC to Kalanagar, said reports.
